John visited Bench Elementary's Make a Difference Club to hear their presentation on plastic bags and the environmental impacts they cause. In January 2008, the club created a plan for getting plastic bags banned from the Cowichan Valley. Through student presentations, educational skits and movies at schools, the Legislature and Duncan City Council, the Club educated on the negative environmental affects of plastic bags. As well, Club members raised funds from the sale of their hand made cloth bags which went to support the blind in Myanmar as well as the homeless and needy in Duncan. All this hard work didn't go unnoticed... They went on to win first place in Canada's National Great EcoKids Challenge and in May, the Club surveyed their membership and found that plastic bag usage had declined by 68%! Way to go kids!
