BC HYDRO LOSING $180 MILLION TO PRIVATE POWER CONTRACTS THIS SPRING

VICTORIA - BC Liberal government energy policies that forced BC Hydro to sign lucrative contracts with private-sector power producers will result in losses of $180 million during the spring melt season, says Opposition energy critic John Horgan.

Horgan highlighted a submission from BC Hydro to the BC Utilities Commission outlining the cost of independent power production compared to the value of the electricity on the open market.

VICTORIA - The B.C. Official Opposition caucus has formally registered its opposition to Enbridge's Northern Gateway Project with the National Energy Board's Joint Review Panel.

"Under the Enbridge proposal, British Columbia would assume almost all the project's risk, yet would see only a fraction of the benefits," said Opposition leader Adrian Dix. "By any measure, such a high-risk, low-return approach simply isn't in B.C.'s interests."
